Herndon United Methodist Church has a well-established history of serving Jesus Christ in the community of Herndon. After meeting for the first time in member homes in 1857, the first Methodist congregation in the Herndon area was organized. It became a part of the Methodist Episcopal Church North in 1869. This congregation built and met in a white frame church located at the corner of Elden and Center Streets. In 1914, a second Methodist church was formed as part of the Methodist Episcopal Church South at Spring and Locust Streets. Both churches united in 1939. The congregation moved into its present location at 701 Bennett Street in 1987. The Spring Street building still serves as a place of worship for another congregation, as does the Elden Street facility.
While the present church building is new, many treasures from the past remain. The "Pastor's Pew", located at the front of the sanctuary, is the one remaining handmade pew from 1872. The altar from the original Herndon church, circa 1870, is located in Room 4. The stained-glass windows in the sanctuary, relocated to the present building from the Spring Street location, have served as memorials since the 1950's. The graphics at the top of each page of this website are taken from the windows.
Herndon UMC is proud of its heritage and continues to present a balanced program of inspiration, challenge, education, mutual support, fellowship, and outreach. There are many opportunities for service here; as you choose to participate in some of the activities offered it is hoped that you will feel a part of this wonderful church and its family of Christians.
