Our Values

Caring

HUMC is a large congregation in a growing community that values and maintains the warmth, love and intimacy that is normally associated with smaller congregations.

Education

HUMC provides educational opportunities for all ages.  Grounded in Scripture, our educational ministry includes both individual and group study so that all who teach and learn are helped and encouraged to grow toward wholeness in Jesus Christ.

Openness

HUMC is a congregation with varying backgrounds, needs, ages, socio-economic status and theological persuasions.  We accept and celebrate our differences realizing that Christ is the head of our church.  We are open to God's spirit, to change, and to question.

Children and Youth

HUMC lives in a neighborhood where families have young children.  Be it Preschool, Sunday School, Worship, Confirmation, Music or Fellowship we minister to our children and youth.

Outreach

HUMC is a community of believers reaching out to all.  We serve Christ in the Herndon community and strive to recognize and heal hurts.  Examples: Link, VIM Christmas in April, Benevolences, UMM/UMW.

Evangelism

Christ calls us to bring in the unchurched, to make disciples of all to be the light of Christ, and to make "belongers" into "believers".  We totally agree that the mission of the United Methodist Church is to make disciples (See 1996 Discipline, pg. 114).  Examples: Igniting Ministry and New Member Classes.

Small Groups

HUMC recognizes that our members only grow, learn and change through conversation and interaction with others.  We encourage members to participate in small groups.  Examples: Choir, UMM, UMW, Disciple Bible Study.

Prayer

HUMC realizes that it can do nothing without prayer.  We glorify God through prayer, asking God's spirit to move within ourselves, our church, our community, and our world.  Example: Prayer Vigil, Prayer before meetings.
