John Wesley founded the Methodist movement in the 18th-century in England. In 1968 the Methodist Church merged with Evangelical United Brethren Church to become the United Methodist Church (UMC). Today it has grown into the second largest Protestant denomination in the United States with over 8.5 million lay members and 37,000 churches.
All persons are welcome in the United Methodist Church, as we are firmly comitted to inclusiveness. Scripture, tradition, experience and reason guides our faith. United Methodists are mission-oriented and socially conscious as we are aware of world events and strive to help those in need. We cooperate with other churches to spread the gospel, care for those in need, alleviate injustice, and foster peace.
For more than 200 years the UMC has expressed concern for the working, the sick, the poor, the orphaned, the aged, the impaired, the oppressed, and the imprisoned. The UMC also has a strong evangelical heritage, as each congregation is a vital center of biblical study and sharing the faith.
